Freedom of expression

Freedom of expression (FoE) is the right to articulate one’s opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship, or societal sanction. As outlined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; the right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.”

It also contains these three aspects:

  1. the right to seek information and ideas;
  2. the right to receive information and ideas;
  3. the right to impart information and ideas
