EAVI at Digital Brusselles Female Tech Incubator Launch on 25th of October 2017

On Wednesday 25th of October EAVI has participated in the launch of Digital Brusselles Female Tech Incubator, at the newly opened BeCentral co-working space in Brussels. Digital Brusselles is Europe’s first female tech incubator which aims to promote inclusive digital transformation by increasing participation of girls and women in digital society.  

Cheryl Miller, the founder of the Digital Leadership Institute Brussels, welcomed the guests and explained the objective of creation and a mission of Digital Brusselles Tech Incubator; to facilitate digital inclusive transformation and address the issue of the gender gap in STEM fields.  

Despite the digital illiteracy levels being approximately equal between men and women in Europe (24% of men and 27% of women), in absolute numbers that represents 12 million more digitally illiterate women than men. In the constantly growing digital market, by 2020 there will be 900,000 digital jobs waiting to be filled. The inclusion of women in digital transformation presents an economic opportunity for filling these newly created jobs.  Therefore DLI launched Digital Tech Incubator, which is already running number of project with the support of its partner’s network (for example Female Digital Starters Series Workshops, CyPro “First Steps” IT Career Training for Women, Digital Muse after-school program for girls).

Katja Legisa, the coordinator of Female Digital Starters Series, then presented Female Digital Starter training. The series of specific workshops on agile management, digital marketing and financing start-ups with leading experts from the field  that intents to equip female entrepreneurs with practical knowledge and tools to enable them to progress their ideas and businesses. Training is open to women of all ages and is free of charge.

Saskia Van Uffelen, CEO Ericsson Belux and Digital Champion of Belgium then talked about the digital transformation, the changes it brings to the industries and as a result the opportunities for the digital start-ups and the skills and competences needed to navigate in a highly digitised shared economy. She also highlighted the need for the competences to empower young people to use internet and social media wisely, in other words Media Literacy skills.

The presentation was followed by the high-level Roundtable on Inclusive Digital Transformation  moderated by Cheryl Miller with leading female  figures from the European, Belgian and Brussels public and private sectors such as Ms. Rose Beaumont from Mastercard; Ms. Claire Bury from DG CONNECT; Ms. Lie Junius, Director from Google; Ms. Afke Schaart from GSMA, Ms. Claudy te Boome, from Ernst & Young; and Ms. Pascale Van Damme from Dell EMC Commercial. The participants presented their views on why women are underrepresented in STEM sector, what can be done in order to improve the situation and the practical steps each of their companies are taking to close the gender gap in their sectors.

Ms. Claire Bury from DG Connect highlighted European Initiatives implemented at the European level as Digital  Skills and Coalition, digital Erasmus and coding week.
