Evens Foundation 2017 Media Literacy Prize Winners

The winners of the 2017 Evens Foundation Media Literacy Prize have been announced. There are two winners this year with Zalab in Rome placing first for its Project Otherness initiative. The judges cited the project’s “exciting approach to media literacy as something connected to lived experience, participation and production” as reasons for bestowing the award. A second Special Jury Prize was awarded to DKMK – The Association for Communication and Media Culture in Zagreb, Croatia for its project Djeca medija (Children of Media). We spoke to project manager and EAVI supporter Danijel Labas to ask him a few questions about how the project began, its achievements and what they will do with that coveted prize money. ARTICLE: Media Education, a Useful Tool to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

Ahead of the WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) in Geneva from 12-16 June, this article from Jean-Claude Domenjoz asks why media and information literacy skills were not included in the list on 17 Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Domenjoz, who will attend the summit’s workshop The Digital Transformation of Learning, Education and Training and the Sustainable Development Goals, considers the competences that media literacy champions and their importance for citizens in the 21st century , concluding that –

“Given its essential importance, media and information education should have been included in the priorities of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. The 2030 Agenda recognizes the potential of ICTs for sustainable development, but does not mention the need for specific skills required to use digital technologies in an appropriate manner.”

COPYRIGHT: Debate at the European Parliament + Rightcopyright Campaign has almost achieved its goal

Organised by Communia, LIBER and EUROCLIO and hosted by Marietje Schaake (ALDE), the debate “What educators need from copyright reform” will be held on Wednesday 21 June at 12:30.Communia writes, “The voice of educators is often overlooked in copyright reform debates. We want to change that. We are inviting practitioners and experts from the field of education to speak about ways in which copyright can support 21st century education. During the meeting we will highlight how the educational sector can benefit from a strong exception, to be introduced in the Copyright Directive. We will also present results of the “Right Copyright for Education” campaign (rightcopyright.eu) – a petition to the European Parliament signed by 5000 educators and citizens from across Europe.”

EAVI is supporting Communia’s campaign rightcopyright.eu. We believe that media literacy will be adversely affected by any changes to copyright that do not include exceptions for educators, which we wrote about here.

The campaign is just short of its target of 5000 (at time of writing) so if you haven’t yet signed then please consider doing so NOW ahead of the debate on the June 21st!

Recent revelations about the Cambridge Analytica firm engaging in massive social engineering campaigns to influence the outcomes of last year’s British referendum and US election illustrate the enormous extent to which our data is being collected and aggregated to form vivid virtual snapshots of who we are. This little Chrome extension should shed some light on which companies are tracking you across the web. Check it out here: https://whotargets.me/
