ABOUT EAVI:
Established in 2005 as an international non-profit association, EAVI, the European Association for Viewers Interests, is the first organisation to recognise the importance of Media Literacy at a European level, which came into being following deep reflections on the need to promote and protect the interests of citizens and media users across Europe. Our offices are based in the EU Quarter, Schuman Roundabout, Brussels.
EAVI has two main objectives: First, to inform EU policy-making processes by ensuring the representation of citizens’ interests and acting as a bridge between citizens, stakeholders, and EU institutions. Second, to raise awareness of the media-related issues that impact lives directly or indirectly and to equip citizens with Media Literacy skills and competencies necessary to navigate the ever-evolving media landscape.
EAVI initiated a wide range of activities, such as partnering and coordinating several EU-wide projects, advocacy, meetings with decision-makers, drafting policy papers, compiling analytical research, exchanging best practices, collaborating with several partners, offering space for debate through public events, organising summer camps, participating in international expert groups, organising and speaking at national and international conferences and webinars.
EAVI has also been producing relevant content on its website and social media platforms, including blog posts and articles, research papers and books, social media campaigns and series, guides and toolkits, workshops and training, cartoons and infographics, audiovisual materials and video-graphics, resource database and lesson plans, conversation series and online conferences, along with several interactive activities and more.
EAVI is a trusted and authoritative voice at the EU Level with a vast European-wide network, including 27 EU member states, 56 partner organisations, and 147 individual members. It has authored on behalf of the European Commission four critical EU-wide studies that define Media Literacy and its assessment levels for the member states. EAVI is a member of several international forums and networks, such as the CDMSI Steering Committee of the Council of Europe, various European Commission Expert Groups, the Advisory Board of the European Audiovisual Observatory in Strasbourg, the MIL Alliance of UNESCO, The European Digital Citizenship Working Group, and more.
EAVI is a facilitator of engaged dialogue and debate. It has consistently shown itself to be a pioneer in its fields of activity by connecting a wide range of stakeholders from international institutions with individuals at the grassroots. We are the Media Literacy coordinator of the first European Festival of Journalism and Media Literacy, Voices, whose first edition took place in Florence in March 2024 with the participation of more than 1,300 people. We have delivered speeches at more than 100 international conferences in four languages across Europe and beyond, as well as organising our own conferences at national and European parliamentary houses.
