EAVI’s partner organisation, the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Service (AVMS) recently established a Media Literacy Network in Macedonia.
Initiated as a part of AVMS Programme, Promoting Media Literacy in the Republic of Macedonia (2016-2018). It was officially launched on 27 April 2017 and currently includes 35 stakeholders.
The Macedonian Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, together with the Film Agency and the AVMS, as well as the Directorate for Personal Data Protection, are among the members of the Network. Also joining the initiative are two private entities from the higher education sector, 10 broadcasters and 18 Civil Society Organisations ranging from those representing journalists, NGOs active in the media sphere, and human rights advocates.
According to the AVMS’s Emilija Petreska, “The idea behind the Network lies in the recognised need for better cooperation among different stakeholders working in the field of media literacy, in order to achieve more fruitful cooperation and more sustainable results.”
The Network will facilitate the exchange of information and media literacy related news, foster members’ collaboration inside the network and enhance their cooperation with European and international organisations. In the framework of its activities, a quarterly newsletter will be published.
Speaking at the event for Network promotion, the EU Ambassador to Macedonia Samuel Žbogar, expressed his support to its creation, pointing out that media literacy is of particular importance for sound democracy, media freedoms and pluralism, and that media literacy goes hand in hand with the development of critical thinking and citizens’ ability to adapt to technological and other societal challenges.
The event was also used to promote several awareness-raising tools. Namely, the AVMS presented a leaflet “About Media Literacy” (За медиумската писменост) intended for the general public. The AVMS prepared a Macedonian version of EAVI’s “A Journey to Media Literacy” and “A Journey to Media Literacy 2: Awareness”, while Albanian language versions were prepared by the NGOs Konedu Global and Metamorphosis and financially supported by the British Embassy. The latter has also supported another AVMS video, “AVMS under magnifying glass”, prepared in the framework of the PROformance Watch project, dedicated to monitoring of media regulatory bodies in Macedonia. These three videos, together with the five videos prepared by School of Journalism and Public Relation in Skopje and funded by the EU, in which a young girl Mediana, talks about media literacy, were aired during the event.
The first joint activity of several Network members, DVD with different media literacy related materials intended for the primary schools, is already underway.
The Network is open to new members. To become a member, you can fill the application and adopt the Act on Formation of the Network. The link can be found here.
