Media literacy is currently considered one of the key competences in the education curricula of many European countries. However, the pedagogical methods are still heterogeneous and not very effective. Young peoples’ use habits are still not healthy, teachers are disoriented before the changes brought about by the TICs, educational authorities vacillate, and families do not truly understand media education.

  • To know the perspective of participants and their institutions on media literacy;

  • To present their experiences and strategies;
  • To locate media literacy in each of the participant’s context, explaining the curriculum of their country or institution;
  • To debate the possibilities for cooperation at national and international level on the subject.

Professor Tapio Varis, of the University of Tampere, emphasized the importance of media literacy as a relevant skill which should be promoted in the curriculum of every citizen. Active citizenship for the speakers is strongly related to good use of mass media and technology more than the commitment of the citizen and their confidence in the media environment and political system. In order to do this, it is important to reevaluate the relationship between citizens and the political class.
