The EAVI Mission

It is EAVI’s mission to contribute to the empowerment of citizens, so that they may fully participate in public life. More in general, our mission is to serve the public interest in the fields of media with the aim to represent and advance the interests of European media users and citizens in general.

Since poor understanding of media and the media landscape is not only detrimental to personal development but also to political and economic progress, we at EAVI strive to empower European citizens in their use and understanding of media, so they can participate fully in modern society. EAVI promotes therefore full citizenship and media awareness by both helping policymakers in creating the right framework for citizens to develop their skills and participate in the democratic process and by educating the citizens themselves on how to utilize the media to their benefit.

The importance of Media Literacy

The Europe of this century needs European citizens to acquire new skills. It is no longer an advantage to be media literate, but a debilitating disadvantage not to be. Citizens must be equipped with the skills to utilize, and benefit from, media. To do this Europeans need to acquire new competences beyond that of traditional literacy.

Knowledge (and wisdom) is the source of good citizenship and there lies the power of democratic, intercultural and economic progress. To obtain true knowledge in the digital age, we citizens need to acquire new skills and competences, adjusted to the changes in society general and the information distribution in particular. Growing media literacy entails not only a greater collective intelligence and cultural participation, but also international competition and therefore economic growth and expertise. Furthermore, it is crucial that everyone, from our children to the elderly, understand that through media we can shape and mold the ideas that we have about society and the world. If we are able to make the most of the wonderful opportunities that the media present to us and if we perfect our media-awareness, then we can begin to create a better Europe of tomorrow, today.

What do we do

While in the past EAVI has focused on assisting the legislative bodies of the European Institutions with its expert opinion and assessments, we are now expanding our scope. While we still engage in participating in conferences, expert panel groups and committee’s including at the highest level at the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of Europe, we are increasingly developing state-of-the-art mobile applications and out-of-the-box practical educational tools. For instance, we have already produced two intriguing educational cartoons on media-awareness for all generations.

With just a small gift of as little as 10 (ten) Euros you will contribute to EAVI to bring media literacy education closer to everyone in a fun, entertaining way, leading to build a society where the voices of citizens, entrepreneurs and the whole of the civil society are heard where they matter the most.

Through its wide range of partners such as governmental institutions, civil society organizations, the media industry and educational communities, EAVI will offer a greater visibility to its donors, literally reaching all corners of society.
