EAVI III International Conference: Citizens’ participation in public life through media
Madrid 25th and 26th November 2009 Senate House

P1010150Active citizenship and participation through the media

Citizen participation to public life has always, and will always, play a strategic role in preserving democracy. All speakers agreed that media literacy is a key component of civil participation. In this sense, the interests of citizens and their role in the political sphere must be analysed.
How can citizens’ participation be facilitated, regulated and fostered? What can be done by the media itself? Who are those responsible for media in the political class? Which political and communication agenda lies ahead?

Paolo Celot, Secretary General of EAVI, introduced the debate provocatively asking the Senate audience why politicians are not required to demonstrate competence and qualifications in order to become legitimate citizens’ representatives in the political arena. You need a license to drive a taxi, why you need nothing to drive a country? He underlined the role of media policy and the responsibility and benefits of the media in the development of full citizenship.
