Children, Youth and the Media

Children and youth are key players in the development of public participation and media literacy. Energizing participation through the media depends on young people and their behavior. Their future participation in the public sphere will depend on how the issue of media literacy will be addressed, or not. What is done at European level to strengthen and protect the participation of young people in the media? What risks and opportunities present themselves, and is the response proportionate? The outcome of their research areas proves that the Internet today  is part of the natural environment of children. In fact, most children have access to the Internet at school and/or at home. Parents and teachers consider Internet to be a primarily educational/ developmental tool. On the other hand children are exposed to inappropriate content, pornography, and violence. This may take the form of pictures or text. Ursula Maier-Rabler, from The University of Salzburg. The EYAG representatives delivered both the protectionist and empowerment points of view of the role of young people in media literacy development, where they are both the victims of media, and the pioneers and entrepreneurs.
