UN Alliance of Civilzations Forum – Rio de Janeiro 27- 29 May 2010 EAVI participated as a speaker at The Open Space section of this forum which provides an opportunity for organizations to present projects and publications and engage with participants in the conference on topics related to intercultural dialogue and cooperation. At this conference a network of over 2,000 political and corporate leaders, civil society activists, youth, journalists, international organizations, and religious leaders convened and in order to agree on joint actions to combat prejudice and build the conditions for long-term peace. Established in 2005 as a UN initiative, the Alliance emerged out of a conviction that in order to achieve sustainable peace, long-standing divisions between cultures need to be addressed. EAVI presented the results of the ‘Study on Assessment Criteria for Media Literacy Levels in Europe’ that it produced for the European Commission, DG Information Society. EAVI highlighted the importance of media literacy as a tool to bring about peace and inter-cultural understanding. The presentation of the study gave a comprehensive view of the concept of media literacy and an understanding of how media levels should be assessed. It also included recommendations for future action. The conference was highly successful with many positive outcomes such as the announcement of a new resource for journalists of the Mediterranean region in collaboration with the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF) and the European Commission.
