Does the digital empathy gap exist? – EAVI Conversations
Conclusions drawn from the discussion with Myles Dyer – 9th of December (EAVI Conversations 2021) Whether some of us are conscious or not of the impact our online behaviours have, it is undeniable that they do influence what is happening in the real world. It seems more difficult though to relate whatever we do online to emotions and feelings, that is why it is said the internet causes dehumanization. Depriving someone of his/her human qualities, personality and dignity are relatively easy when we are protected by the distance of cyberspace and the pixels [...]
Digital citizenship and social movements: patterns and responsibilities – EAVI Conversations
Conclusions drawn from the discussion with Stacey Featherstone and Athina Karatzogianni – 7th of December (EAVI Conversations 2021) Conversations on digital citizenship are never predictable, as citizens’ rights and duties are many and the variables influencing their direct participation are countless. For the session with Prof. Athina Kataztogianni (Prof of Media and Communication at the University of Leicester) and Stacey Featherstone (Public Policy Manager at Meta), the focus has been the use of social media to foster digital citizenship and social movements. Digital citizenship shifted from being just about digital skills, to encompass also [...]
Climate change and social inequality – EAVI Conversations
Conclusions drawn from the discussion with Kristy Drutman – 2nd of December (EAVI Conversations 2021) Whenever we think about climate change we imagine natural disasters, temperatures and sea levels rise. The general discourse also focuses sometimes on its impact on humanity in the future, but rarely is mentioned that climate injustice is affecting more certain categories than others. Wealth and social inequalities are some of the causes leading low-income individuals and minorities (just to name a few) to be greatly affected by global warming and whatever comes with it. Kristy Drutman, the speaker in [...]
Activism: internet as a public space – EAVI Conversations
Conclusions drawn from the discussion with Diletta Bellotti – 1st of December (EAVI Conversations 2021) “Activism consists of efforts to promote, impede, direct, or intervene in social, political, economic, or environmental reform with the desire to make changes in society toward a perceived greater good.”[1] Numerous are definitions on the internet, but this is one of the few giving emphases to the concepts of change and the common good; aspects also highlighted by our host Diletta Bellotti, a human rights advocate and activist. After her session, we can probably rephrase the definition of [...]
How the youth sees the future: social dynamics and social media
Older generations tend to put a lot of pressure on young generations. They will be the ones improving the legacy, they will be the ones ameliorating our planet, our politics, our communities and so on and so forth. But how do young people feel about their future? What are their perspectives and expectations? According to a research run by Eurispes, [ref] S. Varlamova, A. Doroshina, E. Kayshauri, The youth about the future: understanding of the social dynamics, chances and opportunities for social mobility, EURISPES, 2018 [/ref] the values according to which young people are planning [...]
Guaranteeing justice online: the role of e-evidence
Nowadays, protecting privacy and online data is undoubtedly a top-priority for the European Union and the single digital market, but if there is law enforcement on one side, there should also be corresponding rules on the other side providing for the sourcing and use of data as evidence. Using data for judicial purposes in criminal proceedings is still a contentious issue within the European Union, since discussions and debates about the topic have lasted 2 years, ending in the drafting of a regulation by the European Commission permitting electronic evidence in criminal matters. But why [...]
The path towards handy European e-services
Euroscepticism is, among other things, based on the idea that European Union is a far-away gigantic master which dictates rules about everything regardless of its citizens’ sake. Actually, European Union has been trying to reduce the gap between its citizens and institutions through several initiatives and platforms, but despite the efforts, not everybody keeps track of these advancements. How is European Union going to succeed in doing that? The Digital Single Market Strategy is one of the core scenarios enabling European Union and the single Member States to assure a balanced growth of the digital [...]
EAVI at OFCOM’s Adult Media Literacy Event
London 13 July, 2018 EAVI was lucky enough to be invited to attend UK digital watchdog, Ofcom's annual Adults' Media literacy Event in London. The event began with presentations by Jessica Rees, who explained Ofcom's adult media literacy tracker when looking at the digital divide - namely, those who are online and those who are not. The clearest indicators were those not just relating to socioeconomic group, but also age. Older respondents were more likely to not use computers for anything at all, and the reason most often cited? "It's not for people like [...]
Digital citizenship needs to be a group effort
The following article was written by Sarah Stoeckl, senior project manager in the ISTE Standards Department. She worked as a writing and literature teacher before becoming an administrator, writer and project wrangler. A student shares his email password with a friend, who shares it with another friend, who sends an inappropriate picture to everyone in the students’ contacts list. It was a joke! But that doesn’t mean there won’t be repercussions. Who failed to teach these kids password safety and email etiquette? Another student wants to fund a film project that combines digital art with music. [...]
